Even the smallest things can delight us.

With these slightly ironic words, Wolf begins his impressive cycle of short songs based on translations of Tuscan rispetti: Italienisches Liederbuch.
These miniature masterpieces – some songs lasting less than a minute – revolve entirely around love, though not always of the sweet, romantic kind. Everyday street scenes alternate with desperate cries of longing, jealous squabbles, and brisk rejections. A love serenade can sound quite off-key, and it's often the women who wear the pants.

Ellen Valkenburg, Florian Just, and Maurice Lammerts van Bueren select the most beautiful songs from this high-level musical soap opera and weave them into a sparkling staged performance. The mini-opera is complemented by stunning French and German duets by composers such as Mozart, Mendelssohn, Fauré, and Berlioz. The concert concludes with an out-of-the-box encore.
